How the writing of POOKOO began
While topics in POOKOO are a look at society, its genesis began with a life-threatening illness that kick-started its writing. The book is a biting look with humor at our world, but its undercurrent is one of grief and surviving.
D.L. Shiloh began writing POOKOO immediately following a hospital stay in Chicago in August 1990 for what was diagnosed as bacterial meningitis. During that hospitalization, during the first night's stay, Shiloh experienced a near death experience: "I found myself in an abyss, a void, a space of darkness, everything completely black, and I remember thinking, 'I'll never write again.' It was such a moment of resolution. A sense that things were over. Then I returned to the [hospital] room, with the IV machine beeping, and I was back."
